The Design Institute of Australia (DIA) has established
the following definitions of interior decorators.
An Interior Decorator
•
embellishes space operating within an existing space;
•
is involved with issues of style and aesthetics most commonly of domestic
interior;
•
may specify product and specify a schedule of finishes but will not
usually produce drawings for construction purposes;
•
works closely with furnishings, art, antiques, fabrics and colours;
•
is likely to have a broad knowledge of the vast range of available products;
•
does not require a degree.
OCCUPATIONAL AREAS
On successful completion of the Certificate IV in Arts (Interior Decoration) a graduate may apply for employment as assistant decoration consultants in specialised wholesale or retail outlets or with independent interior decorators / design consultancies.

ARTICULATION & CREDIT TRANSFER
The Certificate IV in Arts (Interior Decoration) contains modules drawn from the Art and Design Curriculum Framework and the National Advanced Building Studies Curriculum. Students successfully completing these modules are eligible for credit transfer into courses containing these modules. Student successfully completing the Certificate IV in Arts (Interior Decoration) will be eligible for entry in the Diploma of Arts (Interior Decoration & Design). Students who successfully complete the Certificate IV in Arts (Interior Decoration) may also be eligible for internal transfer to the Bachelor of Architecture Degree offered at OPIE.

An Interior Designer:
•
manipulates space, making alterations to existing spaces through structural
alterations;
•
has a degree from an established design school or recognised portfolio;
•
is trained in building construction, lighting, materials, building regulations
and components;
•
can produce construction drawings and manage fit out contracts;
•
can design commercial projects involving aspects of public health, welfare
and safety.
Occupational Areas
The Diploma of Arts (Interior Decoration and Design) prepares a student for a vocation in the Interior Decoration and Interior Design fields. Successful completion of the Diploma of Arts (Interior Decoration and Design) will enable a graduate to seek employment within the decoration industry or to seek employment as an assistant in a design consultancy. Full qualification as an interior designer will require additional advanced or degree studies (see Articulation).

Students successfully completing the Diploma of Arts (Interior Decoration and Design) may apply for associate membership of the Design Institute of Australia and/or the Building Designers Association of Victoria.

the National Advanced Building Studies Curriculum. Students successfully
completing these modules are eligible for credit transfer into courses

from components of related
