This qualiﬁcation applies to building designers who undertake building design projects covered by the Building Code of Australia (BCA), except Construction Type A buildings. Building designers may specialize in residential projects, including new buildings, heritage restorations and additions or renovations; or they may also undertake commercial and industrial projects, such as factories, motels, oﬃces, restaurants, retail or service outlets and warehouses

A range of assessment strategies is employed for this qualiﬁcation and the choice of strategy is dependent on the nature of the unit of competency. Strategies may include but not limit demonstrations, observation, projects, presentations, knowledge tests, reports and interviews.
Recognition of prior learning
Students are able to apply for recognition of prior learning for individual units of competency.
Units from this qualiﬁcation that are also contained in other qualiﬁcations recognised under the AQF will be recognised for credit transfer purposes.
Eligibility/ Entry requirements
This qualiﬁcation requires a minimum of year 12 completion or equivalent and an entry interview/test. In circumstances where it is considered that a learner’s language and/or literacy skills may not be at the required level, assistance may be given in the form of a tutor during studio time.
The program will be delivered on campus and will be face-to-face delivery. OPIE provides students with learning support assistance through access to resources such as the library and learning materials.
The training program covers 17 units of competency taken from the Qualiﬁcation. There are 7 core units and 10 elective units. All 10 units may be chosen from the elective list A or alternatively 6 or more units can be chosen from Group A and between 1 and 4 units from Group B.
Entry/ Exit points
A student may exit from this qualiﬁcation at any time with a Statement of Attainment for any units of competency completed successfully up to that point.
Students are issued with learning materials and handouts relevant to each unit.
This Qualiﬁcation can lead to an Advanced Diploma of Building design.
